Outstanding track record for animal protection thanks to Swiss origin and organic and free-range husbandry.
Longstanding commitment to animal welfare
We have been awarded top marks for our animal protection standards by Swiss Animal Protection (SAP). This is confirmation by an independent body of our longstanding commitment to humane animal husbandry.
We have enshrined animal welfare in our multi-year sustainability targets for 2014-2020 as one of the strategically important sustainability issues (targets 2.1.4 for Retail, Production and Wholesale). Under our Naturaplan and Naturafarm labels, we have been selling meat and eggs from organic agriculture and access-to-range and free-range husbandry for the last 22 years.
Switzerland has some of the world's strictest animal welfare legislation. Because of this, we source the majority of our veal, beef and chicken from Switzerland. All our fresh pork and rabbit meat originates from Switzerland, as do 94 percent of our eggs. Since we cannot source all our needs domestically, we are working with SAP to ensure that foreign producers rear their animals under conditions comparable to those in Switzerland.
Outdoor exercise and particularly animal-friendly stabling
Like organic operations, whose production complies with the Bio Suisse guidelines, our Naturafarm producers must also participate in the Federal programmes for PAS (Particularly Animal-Friendly Stabling) and ROEL (Regular Outdoor Exercise for Livestock).
30 animal welfare projects
We are currently working with our meat processing company Bell on over 30 projects to promote animal welfare. These include flagship projects, such as Baltic Beef (beef from suckler cow husbandry in the Baltic states), the dual-purpose chicken to avoid the killing of male chicks in egg production and the trialling of young boar fattening to avoid castration in pig fattening.
