Supporting the Business Environmental Performance Initiative

Many of the products consumed in Switzerland come from abroad, where resources and the environment are sometimes placed under great strain during production, processing and transport.

Therefore, we have been involved from the outset (in 2012) in a working group of the Foreign Trade Association (FTA) seeking to improve the environmental performance of high risk production facilities. Like the Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI), the FTA's Business Environmental Performance Initiative (BEPI) is based on harmonized criteria and the avoidance of multiple audits. The goal of the BEPI is to establish a broad-based and future-proof minimum standard to improve the environmental performance of production facilities in high risk countries. The emphasis is on risk analysis and individual advice and training for manufacturers.

Pilot projects in Vietnam and China

In 2013 we, along with a number of suppliers, participated in a pilot project in Vietnam and, since 2015, we have been implementing BEPI in selected production facilities in China, with the support of the Coop Sustainability Fund. Drawing on this foundation, instruments are being developed that can also be used by other member companies of the FTA.
