Every single person is precious
We promote the integration of people with disabilities, for example with the creation of special jobs in our supermarkets, or by cooperating with foundations operating sheltered workshops.
People with disabilities are often highly motivated, but perhaps not as efficient when it comes to the tough demands of day-to-day work. We fill around one per cent of our jobs with people with a lower performance capacity, thus helping them to be integrated in everyday life in society.
Integration Handicap project
In the six cantons of Western Switzerland we work with various institutions to integrate people with disabilities in professional life. In this project, several people share a regular job in one of our stores. Specially trained mediators support them in their dealings with customers and colleagues.
Work for sheltered workshops and social institutions
For many years now, we have successfully been expanding our cooperation with sheltered workshops. Whether wine racks, bird houses or kitchen aids – the manufacture of Coop products gives many people with disabilities a chance. We sell products from sheltered workshops worth more than CHF 3 million each year. We also source goods that are manufactured in prisons. In doing so, we contribute to the professional and social reintegration of offenders during and following their sentence. Our wooden crates are assembled in Thorberg prison (Canton Berne) and also in the IRIS-FR institute for reintegration in Flamatt (Canton Fribourg), for example.
