Below is an overview of the organizations with which we maintain regular contact or implement projects, or which we provide with support, financial or otherwise.
Environmentally sound procurement partners
Agroscope conducts research into safe and flavoursome food, a healthy environment and innovative, competitive agriculture. Research into agriculture, nutrition and the environment is an investment in the foundations of our future, which is why we support Agroscope in its activities.
Bio Suisse is the umbrella organization of Swiss organic farmers. We have been promoting organic agriculture together with Bio Suisse since 1993, and provide a broad customer base with a wide range of organically produced food products.
amfori Business Environmental Performance Initiative (amfori BEPI)
We support the amfori BEPI. Its aim is to establish a broad-based, future-oriented minimum standard so that environmental performance in production facilities in high-risk countries can be improved.
Common Code for the Coffee Community (4C) Association
In 2006, we became the first retailer to join the Common Code for the Coffee Community (4C) Association. This code is based on criteria and areas for control for ecological, social and economically sustainable coffee production.
Danube Soya Association
As a member of the Danube Soya Association, we support an innovative project promoting the GMO-free cultivation of soya beans in the Danube region, which offers ideal weather and agricultural conditions for the cultivation of high-quality soya in Europe.
Energie-Agentur-Elektrogeräte (Energy agency for electrical appliances – eae)
The eae is an initiative of associations of the electrical appliances industry together with a leading consumer organization and an electrical engineering corporation, dedicated to the promotion of sparing and rational use of energy in the electronic devices sector. It works together with Swiss Energy, the federal programme based on partnership for energy efficiency and renewable energy, which we also support.
Together with the World Food System Center at ETH Zurich, we search for improvements in the area of sustainable nutrition. To this end, the Center brings together various research areas of ETH Zurich.
Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
The FSC quality seal guarantees environmentally sound, socially acceptable and economically sustainable timber production. We co-founded FSC Switzerland in 2003 and are also partner of the WWF Global Forest and Trade Network with the aim of promoting the FSC quality seal.
Global Partnership for Good Agricultural Practice GlobalG.A.P.
GlobalG.A.P. has drawn up standards for monitoring good agricultural practice. These standards not only fulfil production-specific requirements, but also consider social and ecological aspects. We require all our business partners to comply with these standards in the areas of fruit and vegetables, and support their implementation regarding flowers, plants and aquacultures.
Together with Hochstamm Suisse and the support of the Coop Sustainability Fund, we are involved in the conservation and promotion of standard fruit tree orchards.
Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)
The MSC is a private charitable organization that has developed an eco-label for fish sourced from sustainable fisheries. Its aim is to contribute to preserving fish populations. We have supported the MSC since 2000 and were the first retailer in Switzerland to introduce MSC-certified products.
Pro Specie Rara
Pro Specie Rara is a foundation committed to the conservation of biodiversity among native crops and livestock. We promote this concern and offer delicious Swiss Pro Specie Rara organic products in all our larger stores.
Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL)
The Coop Sustainability Fund supports several projects for researching organic agriculture, in which FiBL is an important partner. It researches and develops methods encompassing everything concerning organic agriculture.
Round Table on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO)
The principles and criteria formulated by the RSPO aim to promote the socially and environmentally sound cultivation of palm oil. In concrete terms, this means that no tropical forest has been cleared using slash-and-burn techniques for palm oil plantations since 2005, that laws are observed and that working conditions are fair and safe. We have been a member since 2004.
Round Table on Responsible Soy (RTRS)
The international RTRS brings together environmental organizations and representatives of producers, mills and NGOs, and has developed criteria for responsible soya cultivation. We are a founding member.
Sativa Rheinau AG
Sativa Rheinau AG was founded in 1999 to ensure independent, GMO-free seed provision for organic farming. Together with FiBL and Sativa Rheinau AG we implement research projects for organic wheat.
Slow Food is committed to good, clean and fairly produced food. Together with Slow Food, we create Presidi to protect small-scale food production under threat. Slow Food food products are produced by hand following traditional methods and are of the highest quality.
Soy Network Switzerland for sustainable soya
The Soy Network Switzerland supports the cultivation and marketing of responsibly produced soya. As a member, we are committed to promoting the sourcing and use of certified soya products.
Swiss Agency for Efficient Energy Use (S.A.F.E.)
The objective of S.A.F.E. is to promote energy efficiency in Switzerland. The S.A.F.E. team is made up of dedicated experts from the areas of energy, environment, communication and marketing. We are in regular contact with this team, exchanging information and ideas.
Swiss Parks Network
We offer a variety of regional specialities from Swiss parks in our supermarkets, promoting the economy and environmental revaluation in these areas.
Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals Programme (ZDHC)
In October 2015, we signed up to the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals Programme (ZDHC). Together with other retailers and brand suppliers, it is our aim to establish new environmental standards in the global textile, leather and shoe industry.
Animal welfare partners
Erzeugergemeinschaft Coop Naturafarm Produzenten (Association of Coop Naturafarm producers – EGN)
The EGN is an association of Naturafarm egg producers (laying hen farmers), as such represents their interests and is our direct point of contact.
Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (FSVO)
The main task of the FSVO is actively promoting the health and well-being of people and animals. Their main pillars are food safety and a healthy diet for people, and protection and health for animals. We work on FSVO projects.
Interessensgemeinschaft Coop Label Porc (Coop Porc Label interest group – IG CLP)
The IG CLP is an association of producers from our Naturafarm Porc (pig breeders and farmers) animal husbandry programme. As a direct point of contact, the IG CLP is the link between us and producers.
KAGfreiland has been committed to humane animal husbandry concerning livestock since 1972 and fights against injustices in the industry. At the same time, KAGfreiland is one of Switzerland’s strictest organic labels and one of our partners.
Mutterkuh Schweiz is the umbrella organization of Swiss suckler cow farmers and beef cattle breeders, and is committed to the economic improvement and safeguarding of suckler cow husbandry. We have been offering beef with Natura-Beef since 1978, and veal with Natura-Veal since 2009, respectively, from suckler cow husbandry.
School of Agricultural, Forest and Food Sciences (HAFL)
The HAFL conducts teaching and research in agricultural, forest and food sciences. With applied research, the HAFL develops solutions for the issues of today and challenges of tomorrow. We have supported the HAFL for several years.
Swiss Animal Protection (SAP)
SAP is committed to an animal-friendly life for livestock and domestic and wild animals. We work closely with SAP for several products to promote animal welfare in Switzerland and abroad. The SAP monitoring service in Switzerland, STS-Kontrolldienst, reviews compliance with animal protection standards for us, among other things.
Vier Pfoten foundation
Vier Pfoten is an international animal welfare organization, committed to the protection of animals since 1998 through projects, campaigns, information and lobbying.
Social and ethical procurement partners
Remei AG in Rotkreuz produces fashionable textiles for Naturaline under the Biore quality seal from fair organic cotton in a transparent process chain. The Biore Foundation promotes biological and biodynamic agriculture, in particular the cultivation of organic cotton as a sustainable livelihood.
Fairtrade Max Havelaar Foundation
The Fairtrade Max Havelaar Foundation labels fair trade products with its quality seal, thus promoting fair trade with producers and workers in deprived regions in the South. Every second Fairtrade product in Switzerland today is sold in one of our stores.
Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation
Helvetas is committed to improving living conditions for underprivileged people in rural areas of Africa, Asia, South America and Eastern Europe. Projects focus on the areas of water and infrastructure, agriculture and markets, climate and the environment, education and peace and democracy. Together with Helvetas, we regularly implement development projects for sustainable farming.
International Labour Organization (ILO)
The ILO is a special organization of the United Nations, charged with promoting social justice, human rights and rights at work.
Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC)
The SDC is the agency for international cooperation in the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA). It is responsible for the overall coordination of development cooperation and cooperation with Eastern Europe with other federal offices, as well as for federal humanitarian aid. We work on SDC projects.
State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO)
The SECO is the federal centre of excellence for all core questions concerning economic policy. We maintain an active and open dialogue with the SECO.
Resource efficiency and climate protection partners
Dachorganisation der Wirtschaft für erneuerbare Energien und Energieeffizienz (Umbrella organization of the economy for renewable energy and energy efficiency – AEE)
As an umbrella organization of the economy, AEE Suisse represents the interests of 24 industry associations and 15,000 ventures and energy providers in the renewable energy and energy efficiency sectors. We are a member of AEE Suisse.
Energie-Agentur der Wirtschaft (Business energy agency – EnAW)
The EnAW offers participants like us reliable, comprehensive services in energy management as well as recognized tools. The emphasis is on the implementation of economic efficiency measures that reduce electricity consumption and CO2 emissions of every business.
Fair Recycling recycles cooling appliances containing CFCs in Brazil and thus makes an important contribution to global climate protection. We support this project in buying emission reduction certificates.
The Ferro Recycling association campaigns for the recycling of tin cans. We are a founding member.
The Igora cooperative promotes the recycling of aluminium packaging. We are part of the voluntary advance recycling contribution system.
Interessenorganisation Batterieentsorgung Inobat (Special interest organization for battery disposal)
Inobat is responsible for the collection, administration and use of the advance disposal fee (VEG) for batteries and accumulators. We work together with Inobat.
The Minergie Association promotes the efficient use of energy and renewable energies in the building sector. The Minergie label is used by business, the cantons, the Swiss Confederation and many individual members.
PET-Recycling Schweiz is dedicated to the collection and recycling of PET bottles. Switzerland has become one of the first countries in the world to complete the PET recycling process. We are a member of the managing committee.
Sens is an independent foundation that campaigns for the sustainable recycling of used electrical and electronic devices as well as lighting and light bulbs. We have been a member for many years.
Schweizerische Vereinigung für Sonnenenergie (Swiss solar energy association – SSES)
The SSES promotes widespread use of solar energy and further renewable energies. We support this goal as a member.
Stiftung Licht Recycling Schweiz (SLRS)
The SLRS light recycling foundation is an industry organization of manufacturers and importers for light bulbs and lighting. Its aim is to process and finance the environmentally sound disposal of lights.
Swico is an association of ICT providers and additional related sectors in Switzerland. Swico organizes the recycling of electrical and electronic devices, as well as the disposal of home and office electronics and mobile phones.
Swiss Energy and the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE)
Swiss Energy is the central platform for raising awareness of energy efficiency and renewable energies; it also informs, interconnects and coordinates the various players involved and supports them in exchanging expertise. Swiss Energy operations are managed by the SFOE and play an important role in its Energy Strategy 2050. We have supported several Swiss Energy projects from the outset.
Swiss Packaging Institute (SVI)
The SVI supports the further development of the entire packaging business in becoming more functional, ecological and economical, and highlights the capacity for innovation in the industry.
Swiss Recycling is the umbrella association of recycling organizations, and as such is an important partner for us.
Vetro Swiss has been commissioned by the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) to collect the fee for glass beverage containers from producers and importers. Glass collectors – primarily municipalities – are compensated for their collection efforts.
Association of Commercial Employees
The Association of Commercial Employees is one of five social partners in our collective employment contract.
Schweizerischer Arbeitgeberverband (Swiss employers’ association – SAV)
The SAV contributes to the creation of optimal framework conditions for Swiss companies, with the objective of promoting Switzerland as an internationally competitive economic and working location.
Syna is an interprofessional Swiss trade union active in the industry, trade and services sectors. It is one of five contractual partners in our collective employment contract.
The Unia trade union is one of five contractual partners in our collective employment contract. It organizes employees in industry, trade, construction and services in the private sector.
Verein der Angestellten Coop (Coop employees’ association – VdAC)
The VdAC is one of five social organizations with whom we negotiate our collective employment contract.
Caritas Switzerland is an aid organization providing emergency relief abroad following disasters as well as sustainable development cooperation. In Switzerland, Caritas is primarily committed to the fight against poverty. Caritas sells Coop food products across Switzerland at rock-bottom prices in its own stores to people in poverty.
Coop Mountain Areas Sponsorship Programme
The Coop Mountain Areas Sponsorship Programme is a non-profit organization that supports Switzerland’s mountain population in improving their working conditions and livelihoods. We bear all of the programme’s administration and personnel costs, so that every franc donated goes directly to benefit Swiss mountain farming families.
We work closely with the IG Zöliakie der Deutschen Schweiz patient organization for coeliac disease in German-speaking Switzerland, which has supported those living with coeliac disease for many years. Besides information on a gluten-free diet and how to deal with coeliac disease, IG Zöliakie organizes various conventions and seminars every year as well as activities for children and adolescents.
Interest Group for a Clean Environment (IGSU)
Supporting the IGSU are the Igora cooperative for aluminium recycling and the Verein PRS PET-Recycling Schweiz association, which have been working together against littering since 2004. We are involved in the IGSU’s anti-littering campaign.
Konsumentenforum kf (Swiss consumer forum)
The kf is the independent, liberal Swiss consumer organization that sees itself as a centre of excellence for questions regarding consumption. We maintain an open dialogue with the kf.
La Salamandre is a publishing house which produces teaching materials on the subject of the environment. The company also organizes events such as the Fête de la Nature, which promotes public respect for the environment, particularly among families and children. We have supported the Fête de la Nature since 2011.
Schweizerische Gesellschaft für Ernährung (Swiss society of nutrition – SGE)
The SGE’s aim is to provide information for the public on all questions concerning a healthy diet, and to promote collaboration between people and organizations engaged in the area of nutrition on either the scientific or practical side. We have carried out several studies together with the SGE.
Schweizerischer Verband diplomierter Ernährungsberater/innen (Swiss association of dietitians – SVDE)
The SVDE has been committed to the interests of qualified dietitians in Switzerland for over 70 years and promotes their further education. We support the SVDE as a sponsor.
With the motto “Essen – verteilen statt wegwerfen” (“Food – share it out instead of throwing it away”) the food charity “Schweizer Tafel” collects food products from us and other supermarket chains and distributes them for free to social institutions such as, for example, homeless shelters, street kitchens, emergency shelters and other aid organizations.
Stiftung für Konsumentenschutz (Consumer protection foundation – SKS)
The SKS is a Swiss organization committed to the protection and interests of consumers. We maintain an open dialogue with the SKS.
Swiss Red Cross (SRK)
With the motto “Für mehr Menschlichkeit” (“For more humanity”) the SRK focuses its services on people in Switzerland and abroad whose lives, health or dignity are threatened or harmed. We make regular monetary donations to the SRK.
Tell-Tex is one of the largest clothing collectors in Switzerland. Tell-Tex carries out regular collections of textiles in support of the Coop Mountain Areas Sponsorship Programme.
Tischlein deck dich
The food charity “Tischlein deck dich” collects food products which have passed their expiry date but not their use-by date from us and other supermarket chains and producers, and distributes them throughout Switzerland to people in poverty.
Bird Life Switzerland
As an umbrella organization of associations for the protection of birds and the environment, Bird Life Switzerland combines two national organizations, 19 cantonal associations and around 450 local departments. In collaboration with this association, we offer a range of products in the Coop Bau+Hobby DIY stores that are particularly bird-friendly.
Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH)
The FOPH is committed to health, promotes a healthy lifestyle and looks after the well-being of every single person in Switzerland. We are an active member of Actionsanté, an initiative created by the FOPH together with organizations and companies in 2009 to promote healthy living in Switzerland.
Since 2005, we have been involved in several workings groups of amfori that aim to improve social standards and the environmental performance of high-risk production facilities.
Global Social Compliance Programme (GSCP)
We are also a member of the GSCP, which has set itself the goal of contributing towards continuous improvement of working and environmental conditions in international supply chains.
Greenpeace is an international environmental organization. In 2013, we were the first Swiss company to sign a declaration of intent with Greenpeace aimed at reducing the use of hazardous chemicals in textile production by 2020.
Interessensgemeinschaft Detailhandel Schweiz (IG DHS)
Die IG DHS ist ein Zusammenschluss der führenden Detailhandelsunternehmen der Schweiz. Sie hat zum Ziel, die Anliegen des Detailhandels in der Öffentlichkeit und in der Politik mit einer Stimme zu vertreten.
Öbu is the special interest group for companies for sustainability and management issues. It conveys information about technologies and tools that companies can make use of today in order to do business in a more sustainable manner. We are a member of Öbu.
Praktischer Umweltschutz Schweiz Pusch
The Praktischer Umweltschutz Schweiz Pusch foundation is committed to ensuring that people act in an environmentally friendly manner. It organizes courses and environmental education, launches event days, provides advice for purchasing green products and designs strategies for the environmental protection of the future. We support the foundation in all of these activities.
Pro Natura is Switzerland’s oldest nature conservation organization. It is dedicated to the promotion and preservation of Switzerland’s plants and animals. We support joint products with Pro Natura.
Swiss Farmers’ Union (SFU)
The SFU represents agricultural interests in Switzerland.
Swiss Association for Standardization (SNV)
The SNV ensures international collaboration in standardization processes, among other things in the environmental management field. We comply with the standards set by the SNV.
United Nations Global Compact
The UN Global Compact is the world’s largest initiative for sustainable development. We use it as a benchmark for our reporting on sustainability.
WWF is the most well-known environmental protection organization in Switzerland. In 2006, we were the first Swiss retailer to enter into a comprehensive environmental partnership with WWF. The main objectives are further promotion of sustainable consumption and environmental protection.
