We support the Business Environmental Performance Initiative

Many of the products consumed in Switzerland are produced abroad, where sometimes significant demands are placed on the local resources and the environment when producing, processing and transporting these goods.

Since its foundation in 2012, we have therefore been involved in a working group of the Foreign Trade Association (FTA) which aims to improve the environmental performance of high-risk production facilities. With the Business Environmental Performance Initiative (BEPI), the FTA – similar to the Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI) – focuses on harmonized criteria and the avoidance of multiple audits. The aim of BEPI is to establish a broad-based, future-oriented minimum standard so that environmental performance in production facilities in high-risk countries can be improved. The focus here is on risk analysis and providing individual advice and training to manufacturers.

Pilot projects in Vietnam and China

In 2013, together with a number of suppliers, we took part in a pilot project in Vietnam, and since 2015, we have been implementing BEPI in selected production facilities in China with the support of the Coop Sustainability Fund. On this basis, a number of tools have been developed that can also be used by other FTA member companies.
