Avoiding, reducing or optimizing packaging

Every year in Switzerland, some 450,000 tonnes of packaging material end up in the dustbin. For many years now, we have been working hard to reduce this quantity, thus saving resources and energy used in production, transportation and disposal, and minimizing the overall volume of waste.

In spring 2009, we launched the “Sustainable packaging” pilot project in selected product categories. The goal was to find out where we could dispense with packaging altogether, how we could reduce packaging, and which recyclable materials could be used. We also asked ourselves how the packaging would ultimately be disposed of, and whether it could be recycled.

More sustainable packaging for all our own-label brands

Two years later, we extended the pilot scheme to use sustainable packaging with all of our own-label brands. We have engaged in continuous re-evaluation of our existing packaging ever since in order to find even more environmentally friendly alternatives. For example, we save material by using thinner-walled PET bottles and by dispensing with packaging altogether when it comes to loose fruit and vegetables. We have established the use of a more environmentally friendly material for our drinks cartons, which are now all FSC-certified, and the middle layer of the plastic trays used in the packaging of many Bell products is made of food-grade recycled PET. Thanks to their square shape, the large Betty Bossi salad bowls now in fact need a third less material, much of which is also made of recycled PET. They can be stacked more easily and take up less space on the shelves and during transportation – just one good example of comprehensive packaging improvement based on the fundamental principles of reducing and optimizing packaging over the entire life cycle of a product.

Hygiene and protection guaranteed at all times

Since the summer of 2011, we have either reduced or made more environmentally friendly more than 2,000 tonnes of packaging material. Despite all the reductions, our more sustainable packaging ensures optimum protection of the products, guaranteeing their freshness and flavour.
