Protein requirements of pregnant and breastfeeding women

Protein requirements are higher during pregnancy and while breastfeeding:
  • pregnant women require 1.1 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day,
  • breastfeeding women require 1.3 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight.
It is especially important to eat appropriate foods during pregnancy to ensure adequate protein intake. From the fourth month of pregnancy, women are advised to consume an extra portion of protein each day. The perfect snack: a pot of yoghurt or a glass of milk.
The requirement is even higher for breastfeeding women. To meet the increased protein requirement, an additional 15 grams of protein are required every day. These quantities can be found in, e.g.:
  • 100 grams of tofu,
  • 150 grams of low-fat quark or
  • a pot of high-protein yoghurt.
