A better life thanks to organic cotton

Naturaline is more than just a fashion brand: for nearly 15 years, the Coop Sustainability Fund has been actively supporting the bioRe Foundation's work, which lies at the heart of Naturaline. Its goal is to permanently raise the living standards of farmers and their communities and to actively support ecological balance.
The bioRe Foundation pursues a holistic approach in its work, based not just on cotton production but also measures to improve the living conditions of the producer families and their villages. This is made possible by the partnership between Coop, Remei AG with its local bases in India and Tanzania, and the bioRe Foundation. Everyone involved benefits from the synergies this creates.

Projects supported by Coop

Through the bioRe Foundation, Coop supports the financing of practical courses, run locally, on the subject of organic cotton cultivation.

Agricultural training for farmers

Through the bioRe Foundation, Coop supports the financing of practical courses, run locally, on the subject of organic cotton cultivation. The goal is to teach the latest organic and biodynamic cultivation methods, through open dialogue between specialists and the farmers. Knowledge transfer, successful examples in practice, and the sharing of experiences are the key to safeguarding and promoting organic cultivation.
Each year, more than 3200 small-scale farmers in India and 1800 small-scale farmers in Tanzania with whom Remei AG collaborates benefit from these courses.

Clean drinking water

Access to clean drinking water still presents a major challenge in many Tanzanian villages. To date, we have therefore funded 97 wells and 34 water tanks in Tanzania. These give people access to clean drinking water, which is fundamental to their health.
The travelling hospital brings medical care to farming villages – funded by Coop via the bioRe Foundation.

The travelling hospital

The villages where small-scale farmers live in India are often remote, leaving families without access to healthcare. Therefore, through the bioRe Foundation, we fund a health bus. More than 125,000 people have already received medical care from the mobile hospital since it began running.
Together with the bioRe Foundation, Coop has co-financed the establishment and running of professional education and training centres for young people in India.

Future prospects through education

Education is key to equal opportunities. In rural regions in India, however, many farmers’ children leave school after primary level, due to financial constraints. Together with the bioRe Foundation, we have therefore co-financed the establishment and running of professional education and training centres for young people in India.
bioRe's cotton seeds are 100% GMO-free and are suitable for organic cultivation.

Commitment to GMO-free cotton

Together with the bioRe Foundation and the FiBL (Research Institute of Organic Agriculture), we enable farmers to plant improved cotton varieties in their fields. This should increase yield and fibre quality, in line with industry requirements. After ten years of intensive research, bioRe India has been able to distribute seeds from its own six varieties to the organic farming families. All the seeds are 100% GMO-free and suitable for organic cultivation in Madyha Pradesh.
