Ian Hunter, the last descendant of the founding family, visited the bourbon distilleries in Kentucky around 70 years ago to learn their maturation techniques. Until that point, all Laphroaig casks were from Europe, yielding a significantly sweeter whisky. Hunter had a selection of ex-bourbon casks shipped to Scotland to test these barrels on his whisky. This was the beginning of Laphroaig as we know it today. The Laphroaig Select contains portions of all known Laphroaig bottlings (10y, PX Cask, Quarter Cask and Triple Wood). The combination of the different casks and bottlings creates a balancing harmony between peat smoke, vanilla, honey and lightly earthy aromas.
