Highlights on the Jungfraujoch

Sphinx Viewing Platform

Ancient travellers who were unable to solve the mystery of the sphinx were strangled by a monster. But visitors to the clifftop of the same name on the Jungfraujoch need not be afraid. What's more, they get to travel in comfort: A super-fast lift transports visitors up to the observatory – an international research station. The lift climbs 108 metres in just 25 seconds. All that's left for you to do at the top is simply enjoy the view. You can leave the mystery solving to the researchers.

Ice palace

The more transitory something is, the more beautiful it is. This is especially true of the ice palace and its treasures. Mountain guides created the corridors and halls in the heart of the Jungfraufirn in the 1930s using ice picks and saws. Today, artists shape the ice with an instinctive feel. Visitors are invited to take a tour of this glass-like, frozen world and discover the artists' work along the way. The eagle, penguin and bear look so real, you would be forgiven for thinking they were simply frozen in time. Quite a sight at minus 3 degrees Celsius!

Eismeer station

Bluish, rugged ice blocks under a blanket of eternal snow with a panorama of 4,000 metre peaks in the distance. This is the setting for the Eismeer station at some 3,160 metres above sea level. The train stops here so that the passengers can take their own souvenir picture. The journey, which in reality takes five minutes, is like travelling back in time several thousand years – the whole of Switzerland would have looked like this during the last Ice Age.

Mönchsjoch hut

The highest manned hut in Switzerland can be accessed from the Jungfraujoch via a marked trail in just 45 minutes. The trail leads through the alpine glacier world in the heart of the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site. The hut offers magnificent views towards Central and Eastern Switzerland as well as the mountains of Valais. It serves all year round as a starting point for tours of the surrounding 4,000 m peaks. No less impressive is the experience at 3,650 metres above sea level. Even the most ordinary of activities needs a special solution here. You wash with snowmelt from a 3,000-litre tank, and food and drink is brought from the Jungfraujoch by the hut warden on a snowmobile. Anyone can stay overnight in the dorm room. Sunset and sunrise included. Where else would you get all of this.
