Château Smith Haut Lafitte Pessac-Léognan AC Cru Classé
Likeable perfectionists. When Florence and Daniel Cathiard bought Château Smith Haut Lafitte in 1990, their vision was to create the best possible wine on this history-steeped estate and its outstanding terroir. The château was renovated and restored to habitable condition, the cellars updated to the state of the art and the vineyards reorganized in a process that lasted many years. Smith Haut Lafitte embodies innovation and perfectionism. The organically farmed vineyards are mapped and monitored by satellite. The barrels are made by the estate’s own cooper and the pips from the pomace are used to make the world-famous Caudalie cosmetics line. Furthermore, a five-star hotel that has earned awards as the best place for wine enthusiasts to stay has been built on the estate. Everything is put to good use at Smith Haut Lafitte. The wines really broke through with the 2009 vintage, when the red earned 100 points from Robert Parker. Back then the style was very concentrated with plenty of extract and marked woodiness. Nowadays the wine is much better – much more balanced and elegant. The 2020 has intense blackcurrant, dark fruit, lilac and graphite notes, as well as slightly exotic hints of fig, coffee and liquorice. Juicy palate with plenty of creaminess and fine extract, very delicate tannin and punchy, ripe berry fruit. The wine is powerful and concentrated, yet still pleasantly balanced and fresh.
