2018 was an outstanding vintage in the Rheingau. With the warm year producing healthy, extremely ripe – in some cases overripe – grapes, it was possible to produce elegantly sweet Auslese wines. Eva Fricke selected grapes from various vineyards for this Rheingau Riesling Auslese Edition Peter Keller, and the result is truly impressive. The wine is light yellow in colour and boasts an intense bouquet of yellow fruit, herbs, a touch of honey and slight mineral notes. Although perceptible on the palate, its sweetness is not in any way overpowering, and is balanced by a mature acidity. This is an elegant, dancing, well-structured Riesling that resonates for a long time. It has a keeping potential of at least ten years. Like all Eva Fricke’s wines, this Auslese is aged in a stainless steel tank.
Originally from northern Germany, Eva Fricke set up her own winery in Germany’s Rheingau wine-growing region in 2006, having previously worked for a large producer. It was a risky move since she did not have any financial backing, but her courage paid off. Fricke worked her way to the top systematically and with immense dedication. She has approximately 13 hectares of vines located around Lorch, Kiedrich and Eltville. Depending on the year, she produces around 60,000 bottles annually, which are sold in 20 different countries. Mondovino is the sole outlet for her Rieslings in Switzerland, and the country is already the 42-year-old’s third most important export market. Eva Fricke takes an uncompromising approach to her work. Authenticity and sustainability are her watchwords. An advocate of organic viticulture, she uses no herbicides or pesticides in her vineyards, and very little copper or sulphur. In the cellar, the wines get minimal stabilization and no fining, and Fricke relies on organic cultured yeasts. The winemaker deliberately ages her wines in stainless steel tanks rather than wooden barrels. They remain on their lees for six or seven months prior to bottling. Eva Fricke believes firmly that wines that have been produced as naturally as possible have much more charisma. When tasted in the glass, the results of her painstaking work prove her right.
