In 2018, German gourmet magazine Der Feinschmecker nominated Katrin Wind for Newcomer of the Year. Although she didn't win the overall title, the Palatinate native has proved in a short space of time that she is one of the emerging talents of the approximately 23,000-hectare winemaking region. 2011 was the first vintage brought to the market by the 28-year-old. Her motto is: The wines must bear my signature. Wind took over her parents’ estate and completely transformed it. Instead of wines from the barrel, today it produces characterful bottled wines. I’m a fledgling producer, the winemaker says. With just six hectares of vineyards, which she is gradually switching to organic production, it's certainly a small-scale enterprise. And that inevitably means manual work with moderate yields. The German, who studied oenology at the University of Geisenheim, currently vinifies the wines in a small cellar. In the medium term, a new building will provide more space and enable a more efficient way of working. The focus is on a handful of varieties, such as Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Pinot Noir Précoce, which is related to Pinot Noir but ripens earlier. At present, Katrin Wind produces around 30,000 bottles a year. Mondovino is the exclusive stockist in Switzerland.
