The 20 hectares of the Mont d'Or Domain near Sion are considered to be an exceptional growing zone in Valais. The vineyard at the foot of the Mont d'Orge was founded by François-Eugene Masson in 1848. 220 terraces were painstakingly arranged, supported by 15 km of dry stone walls. The vineyards are located between 495 and 660 meters with an average gradient of 50 to 55% and up to 75% in some places. To Masson, the Valais owes Sylvaner, called Johannisberg here. Georges Masson, the founder's son, brought this grape to the Valais in 1870 during a trip to Germany. It is a tribute to the Johannisberg Castle in the Rheingau (where Riesling has been cultivated for the past 200 years), why this grape variety is called Johannisberg.
