Chamoson is the largest winegrowing municipality in Valais, with a surface of approximately 425 hectares. The proportion of white wine is 48%, of which 27% is Chasselas and specialty wines occupy the rest. The share of red wine is 52%, of which 21% is Pinot Noir,27% Gamay and the rest are specialties. Sylvaner is a variety that was imported from Rheingau (Johannisberg Castle) in the middle of the nineteenth century. Previously downgraded to Fendant, it is in high demand today and almost has a specialty status. Due to Chamoson's microclimate, these Johannisbergs offer extremely delicate aromas compared to those of other Valais regions. This wine is selected once a year by the Coop winemakers and bottled by Coop.
