The rapid rise of Eva Fricke

Something that almost every wine-grower dreams of: receiving 100 points in the most influential American trade magazine «Wine Advocate». Eva Fricke, a German producer from the Rheingau region, recently joined this privileged group. Her Trockenbeerenauslese Riesling Lorcher Krone 2019 recently earned top marks. But that’s not all – the magazine also awarded 95 or more points to five other wines. And another accolade followed shortly after. The German magazine «Der Feinschmecker» classed Eva Fricke’s winery as one of the «5 F-rated wineries», i.e. the group of first-class producers.
And Eva Fricke is a classic newcomer. She has not taken over a family business and had not planned to pursue a career in wine. In 2006 she owned an area of 0.24 hectares in the Rheingau wine-growing region and bottled her first vintage. Almost out of nowhere, a decent-sized estate was built up that now covers 13 hectares of vineyards and produces around 60,000 bottles per year. The wines are exported to around 20 countries, including Switzerland. Mondovino believed in this young German winegrower’s potential five or six years ago and initially imported modest quantities of 300 bottles each of the local Lorch and Kiedrich wines. Switzerland has since advanced to become the third most important market for Eva Fricke.
According to «Feinschmecker», Eva Fricke’s winery is one of the most «interesting» in the Rheingau region and «one of the best in Germany». The producer has succeeded in creating an individual style and delivering consistently high quality over the years despite sometimes difficult circumstances. Fricke represents a distinct and possibly rather modern Riesling style. Her wines are always straightforward, puritan, expressive, elegant, have a low alcohol content and clearly convey their origin. The local Lorch Riesling, grown on slate soil, is always more minerally, spicier and firmer than the Kiedrich, grown on clay and loessial soil, which is creamier, juicier and possibly accessible earlier on. In its selection of rare wines, Mondovino focuses primarily on this German winegrower’s dry crus but also includes one or two examples of wines with residual sweetness in the «Edition Peter Keller». In any case, these are great wines that offer excellent value for money.
