Cornalin

Cornalin – formerly known as Landroter – is one of the current stars of the Valais wine region. The variety was well known and popular in Valais as early as the 14th century.

Cornalin – an Italian diva

The Cornalin grape variety originated in the Aosta Valley in northern Italy from where it was brought to canton Valais at the end of the 19th century. The variety quickly become very popular there despite not being an easy grape to grow. It is susceptible to disease, ripens late, and yields can be irregular. The variety was thus gradually grown less frequently and almost died out in the 1970s, before being rediscovered and systematically cultivated and marketed. It is also known as Humagne rouge in Valais. For many years it was not clear that the two varieties were actually identical.

Wine from the Cornalin grape – enjoyable at any age

Cornalin produces dark wines with concentrated fruit, mild acidity and soft tannins. Young wines exude aromas of berries and sour cherries which develop into spicy notes after a few years in the bottle. Good Cornalin wines can mature for some five years and then go particularly well with game dishes. This wine can be enjoyed both young or aged.
