What makes the wines so very special
Jan Schwarzenbach, Master of Wine, enthuses: "We have worked together with all winemakers for many years. As such, after I enquired about Cooperation Wines, they immediately agreed and have been putting a great deal of energy into this project".
Together with the family members – Maria Urrutia (Cune from Rioja), Dirk Niepoort (Niepoort from Douro), Etile Carpenè (Carpenè Malvolti from Veneto), Raffaele Boscaini (Masi from Veneto), Cristina Mariani (Banfi from Tuscany), Ricardo and Álvaro Palacios (Descendientes de J. Palacios from Bierzo) and Damien Carruzzo (Provins from Valais) – Jan Schwarzenbach personally tasted wines at their estates from different tanks, barrels and stocks, picked out a selection and created a collection of the best wines. Above all, the wines are intended to appeal to newcomers to wine.
The shared experiences of Jan Schwarzenbach MW and the winemakers, as well as the atmosphere at each estate, makes Cooperation Wines something very special – a friendly collaboration resulting in wonderful wines. The aim was not to produce inaccessible wines, but rather fruity, elegant and affordable wines that have a very special touch owing to the history of Cooperation Wines.
Cooperation Wines are available exclusively at Coop – and only in a limited release.
Descendientes de J. Palacios
Jan Schwarzenbach: "This fruity and spicy wine reflects the wild and diverse landscape of Bierzo. The mosaic of small, organically cultivated plots belonging to Descendientes de J. Palacios gives rise to original wines for curious connoisseurs."
Jan Schwarzenbach: "Cristina Mariani-May and I have blended a superior Tuscan wine which is silky and juicy. Made with 30% Sangiovese, the wine is typically Tuscan, but it gains a wonderful smoothness and fruity sweetness by being blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah."
Jan Schwarzenbach: "A huge selection of various wines was available to us and we tinkered for hours to produce this wine. A powerful Swiss white wine that really allows the native varieties of Valais to shine."
Jan Schwarzenbach: "The collaboration with cellar master Andrea Dal Cin and Raffaele Boscaini was rewarding and very exciting. It was a real pleasure to create a blend of the fantastic Appassimento wines."
Jan Schwarzenbach: "CUNE is run by siblings Maria and Victor Urrutia and they are the fifth generation. Maria Urrutia takes care of marketing and sales for the winery and the wines. Jan Schwarzenbach, Master of Wine, and Maria Urrutia have combined highly aromatic, lean wines from Rioja Alavesa with powerfully structured wines from the warmest locations in the Rioja Alta."
Jan Schwarzenbach MW and Carpenè Malvolti have selected a prosecco that is (unusually) aged for two weeks in 500-litre French barrels, and the wine is then bottled as a brut.
Jan Schwarzenbach: "Dirk Niepoort was the first to make dry red wines from Douro famous in the world of wine. Today, his 'Fabelhaft' is the best-selling red wine in Portugal. Jan Schwarzenbach, Master of Wine, and Dirk Niepoort have blended three tanks of wine made from ancient, almost 100-year-old vines from the outstanding 2015 vintage."
