Because of its gigantic area under vines, the region is often referred to as "Italy's wine cellar". Unfortunately Apulia also produces the largest yields per hectare, but investments by prestigious wine houses give grounds for hope.

The history, wine and grape varieties of Apulia

The ancient Greeks were early admirers of wines from Tarantum (today's Taranto), and the Romans appreciated them too.
More than 80% is red. The huge DOC area of Castel del Monte produces wines of all colours. The reds have strong, complex aromas, while the rosés are often quite light, but fruity and elegant. Primitivo di Manduria wines are powerful, concentrated reds. White Locorotondo is produced from the local Verdeca grape, and its best examples are fruity and acidic.
  • Vineyard area and production volume: 145 000 hectares, some 8 million hectolitres per year.
