Why a wine from this region has the strange name "Est!Est!!Est!!!" is explained by a story from the Middle Ages. A German bishop sent his cup bearer ahead to scout out the best inns and wines. If an inn came up to scratch, its door was marked with an "Est!", which means "It is (here)". In Montefiascone the cup bearer was so impressed that he issued a triple seal of approval.

Lazio surrounds Rome. The hilly landscape is studded with lakes formed from volcanic craters, the most famous of which is Lake Albano.

Wines and grape varieties

The volcanic soils offer ideal conditions, especially for white varieties. Predominantly dry whites with fresh acidity and pure fruit. The best known are Frascati, Est!Est!!Est!!! and Colli Albani. The reds are mostly mild, appealingly fruity when young. Few are worth laying down. Whites: Malvasia del Lazio, Trebbiano. Reds: Sangiovese and Montepulciano.
  • Vineyard area and production volume: 51 000 hectares, some 3 million hectolitres per year.
