The island has experienced many different rulers and cultures. It managed to absorb this diversity, while at the same time preserving its distinctiveness – which can also be seen in its viticulture.
Viticulture was influenced by the island's relations with the Iberian Peninsula.
Wines and grape varieties
Three red grape varieties predominate. Cannonau for strong, high-alcohol red wines, sweet or not, is sometimes fortified to resemble port. The other two are Giri and Monica. White wines from Vernaccia and Vermentino, ranging from dry to sweet, are traditionally powerful.
