Catalonia

Catalonia is seen as a key player in the development of modern winegrowing, setting technical benchmarks for the whole country. But it is also one step ahead in green development, being home to the majority of organic winegrowers.

History

Like the rest of Spain, Catalonia has a turbulent past. Its vines were brought there by the Phoenicians and Carthaginians and cultivated by the ancient Romans. Catalonia is located in the north-east of Spain on the Mediterranean coast. There are huge differences in temperature throughout the region. For a long time Catalonia mainly produced cavas (sparkling wines), and 90 percent of all Spanish sparkling wine is produced there. The region has also been producing high-quality white and red wines for some time now. Regional specialities are Rancio, a madeirized white, sherry, and strong wines from Priorat and Empordà, while Conca de Barberà produces fresh white wines. The DO areas are Alella, Empordà-Costa Brava, Catalunya, Cava, Conca de Barberà, Costers del Segre, Montsant, Penedès, Pla de Bages, Priorat (DOCa), Tarragona and Terra Alta. The predominant grape varieties are Garnacha (Grenache), Macabeo, Monastrell, Parellada, Tempranillo and Xarel lo.
