Blaufränkisch may be an indigenous variety from Austria, where it is one of the most widely planted grapes. However, its exact origin remains uncertain, some claim it could be in Croatian Dalmatia or in Hungary.
For a long time this grape was confused with Gamay, even though there was no evidence that the two were related. In Germany it is also known as Lemberger, and in Hungary it goes by the name of Kékfrankos. Blaufränkisch is one of the most widely planted red wine grapes in Austria and is the local variety in the Austrian Burgenland region. Wines made from Blaufränkisch are dark, rich in tannins, possess a fine acidity and ripe cherry aromas.
