Château Tanunda

Château Tanunda, birthplace of the Barossa, is one of Australia’s most historically significant wineries. Established in 1890, the 2020 vintage celebrates 130 years of fine winemaking! The Château is privately owned by the Geber family. Mrs Evelyne Geber is of Swiss descent and the family are very proud to have “Swiss roots Down Under”. The team have put their heart, soul and passion into handcrafting some of the Barossa’s most collectable and internationally acclaimed wines such as our Grand Barossa Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.

How it all started

The story for the Geber family all began in 1998 when Mr John Geber was out one day riding his bike. On cycling past the Chateau, he literally fell in love with it. He could see its potential in spite of the fact that it was in an abandoned state. He bought the Chateau that very day!
23 years later, the Chateau is in its 131 vintage producing high quality wines. We handcraft our wines by combining traditional methods and modern technology. We believe in minimal intervention to allow the true character of the grapes to express themselves.
Barrel ageing and master blending is our skill and artform. The vineyards are our soul; the basket-press winery is our heart; the wines are our passion; everything is finely tuned to produce delicious, distinctive and elegant wines.

Sustainability

We take caring for the environment very seriously at Chateau Tanunda. The winery is a member of the Sustainable Winemaking Australia scheme as part of our Environmental Improvement programme. We have reduced our electricity requirement by 35% as a result of solar power generation and 100% of our waste water is used to irrigate crops.
Our Swiss family heritage is important to us and we are proud to have been a supply partner to the Coop for 25 years. Our Grand Barossa Shiraz is one of Coop's best-loved and best-selling overseas wines (if not the best). Whilst Australia may be known for Shiraz, the Barossa Valley and Chateau Tanunda are producing stunningly appealing Cabernet Sauvignon too under the Grand Barossa brand.
