Gérard Bertrand

Gérard Bertrand owns 16 estates in the south of France. A firm believer that allowing vines to grow in harmony with nature is the best way to produce great wines with all the hallmarks of their terroir, he was an early adopter of biodynamic viticulture at his estates, starting with Domaine de Cigalus in 2002.

Since then, he has been progressively rolling the technique out to all his teams and vineyards, acquiring a full mastery of it in the process. Today, all his estates use biodynamic processes and have been, or are in the process of being, Demeter-certified. It is rare to find a winemaker with so much land who also possesses so much expertise. Having 880 hectares divided into 16 estates, each with its own distinctive soil, climate and character, permits a diversity of approaches and experience that feeds into the expertise accumulated by Gérard Bertrand and his teamexpertise that makes them an international benchmark in biodynamic viticulture.
In 2020, his outstanding commitment to organic viticulture earned him the accolade of Green Personality of the Year at The Drinks Business Green Awards.

As part of his efforts to share his beliefs and expertise and support the shift towards organic viticulture in southern France, Gérard Bertrand has set up a long-term partnership scheme that supports winegrowers who are switching over to organic techniques, or are already using them, over a period of 10 years. These partnerships provide technical, organizational and financial support to help projects through to completion.
Acclaimed as much for his talent as a blender as for his daring and creativity, Gérard Bertrand both innovates and develops remarkable international successes that combine premium wines with stylish bottle design in brands such as Cote des Roses, Naturae and Gris Blanc.
Gérard Bertrand promotes the Mediterranean lifestyle with a flourishing programme of events for tourists and lovers of culture and the arts, based primarily at Château l’Hospitalet in Narbonne, a major centre of wine tourism. Each summer for the past 17 years, his festival has played host to some of the biggest names in international jazz.
