Diego and Alberto Cusumano

The extraordinary variety that their land offers is a gift that Diego and Alberto Cusumano welcome with devotion and transform into experience. Diversity is a virtue that they cultivate and share with passion.
«It all started with Francesco, our father. He was the first to start working in this field and to discover the special aspects of producing wine in Sicily. When we decided in 2000 to start our project, we knew that it was necessary to own our own vineyards and to use only our grapes. With our father we toured Sicily looking for the most suitable location. We started close to Partinico, where there was already a wine cellar. It was the most obvious choice. The first estate we purchased was Tenuta Ficuzza, in Piana degli Albanesi. A mountainous part of Sicily between Palermo and Corleone. From there we came to Butera, where the current Tenuta San Giacomo is situated, and where we produce our Nero d’Avola Sàgana from soil that is as white as nougat. From there we went to Presti e Pegni, in Monreale, again close to Palermo, and Monte Pietroso and finally we conquered Etna with the Alta Mora project.»

Tenuta San Giacomo

«One day when we were here a local farmer took some soil in his hands and said: “Do you see this? It’s white nougat.” The soil of Tenuta San Giacomo is like Sicilian nougat, white, pure, and conceals in its interior the almonds and pistachios. The soil here is chalky and the light is strong. Temperatures vary considerably here between day and night – and we’re up on a hill, about 400 metres above sea level. At Tenuta San Giacomo, the natural strength of Sicilian wines and the elegance and freshness that come from the altitude and chalky soil are perfectly represented in the Nero d’Avola. This grape variety, which is typical of Sicily, grows in such special soil and reaches full and well-balanced ripeness. The same winery produces Alimo, a blend of Nero d’Avola and Merlot.»

Tenuta Presti e Pegni

«Tenuta Presti e Pegni is located in Monreale, on hills where the vines are exposed to the sun from dawn until sunset. A breeze from the sea, which is about 10 km away, freshens the air and dissipates the heat. The soil here is loamy and compact, and this lends greater complexity to the wines, starting with their colour. Here, given the composition of the soil and the microclimate, and besides the old Nero d’Avola vines, we decided to focus on international grape varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and above all Syrah. This is where we produce our Super Sicilian, Noà, from Nero d’Avola, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, and Benuara, which is a blend of Syrah and Nero d’Avola. In both cases, the yield is low, and great attention is paid to selection. We dedicate all the time needed to each vine. We are not in a hurry. This has shaped our journey, which continues to evolve.»
