Why social media are important for wine-growing

To mark «Women's Day 2021», the rather unconventional but highly readable German wine magazine «Schluck» has listed 25 people who are shaping the field of oenology and who stand out from the crowd. This group includes wine-grower Juliane Eller from Rheinhessen but in the «influencer» rather than the «wine-grower» category. This is as it should be, as there is probably no other producer who is as active on social media channels as she is. The reason behind Schluck's choice: With her courage, stamina, the right contacts and talent for storytelling, Juliane Eller was deemed to be a role model for female entrepreneurs.
The German wine-grower and her winery JUWEL Wines are followed by almost 40 000 people on Instagram – possibly a record She also posts on Facebook and uses Spotify for her podcast – YNDA (you never drink alone) which turns acquaintances into friends with its cheery, wine-related content. Juliane Eller always talks about her craft and her daily work, and provides interesting insights into where the wine comes from. During this pandemic in particular, the digital windows are a good way to connect with customers. The wine-grower wants to reach a younger audience above all, and explain why it's worth spending more than 1,99 € on a bottle of wine. For this price it's simply not possible to produce a quality wine.
But even the best messages are useless if the liquid content isn't up to scratch. Here, Juliane Eller has nothing to worry about. Besides working in a sustainable manner in the vineyards and cellar, she attaches just as much importance to producing characteristic, excellent wines that are true to their origins – and which offer good value for money. Of course, all these values can be conveyed via the Internet and social media, as Juliane Eller demonstrates most convincingly. But the personal contact and encounters are lost in virtual tastings and online shopping sessions. Ultimately, there's no substitute for a visit to the winery. And here too, the German wine-grower has no reservations: her winery doors will always be open – as soon as the situation permits. And anyone who won't make it to Germany anytime soon can enjoy the straightforward, likeable Pinot Gris 2020 from my Edition.

Der Grauburgunder Edition Peter Keller 2020 von JUWEL Weine ist ein überaus gelungenes Beispiel aus dieser oft verkannten Sorte. Es genügt auch höheren Ansprüchen genügt. Die Trauben für diesen Wein stammen aus verschiedenen Lagen im Dorf Alsheim in Rheinhessen, wo Juliane Eller und ihr Gut zu Hause sind. Für diese Spezialabfüllung hat die Winzerin die besten Partien selektioniert und zu einem trinkfreudigen Weisswein veredelt. Er wird ausschliesslich im Stahltank ausgebaut und spontan mit wilden Hefen vergoren. Der biologische Säureabbau, also die Umwandlung von Apfel- in die Milchsäure, wird bewusst nicht durchgeführt. Das Resultat ist denn auch nicht ein weichgespülter, sondern ein charaktervoller, geradliniger Grauburgunder mit bemerkenswerten Eigenschaften: im Glas helles Gelb, vielschichtiger Duft von gelben Früchten, Kräuter- und leicht mineralischen Anklängen, im Gaumen trocken, mit schöner Frucht, frisch, leicht, rassig, würzig, mit guter Länge, ausbalanciert mit einem schönen Schmelz. Der Grauburgunder ist vielseitig einsetzbar.
