Founded in 1791 by Philippus Wolvaart, Nederburg is one of South Africa's oldest wineries.
Nederburg is one of South Africa’s oldest wineries.
Nederburg is situated in the Paarl wine region and is South Africa’s biggest winery. It was established in 1791, by German expat Philippus Wolvaart. Bottling began in 1937. Today, Nederburg produces 10 million bottles, from a basic Riesling to the wines Edekeur and Private Bin, which can only be bought at the famous Nederburg auction. A percentage of annual production goes under the hammer at this auction. Around 1,600 invited guests can bid and prices often reach dizzying heights.
The wines available via the usual channels, however, bear witness to the cellar's long and chequered history: Chenin blanc Anchorman is dedicated to the founder Philippus Wolvaart, and is crafted from one of South Africa’s oldest varietals. Brewmaster, a red wine in the style of Bordeaux, recalls a figure from the winery's past: Johann Graue, who made great strides improving the estate’s quality in the 1940s. Gewürztraminer The Beautiful Lady is dedicated to his wife Ilse, and Sauvignon blanc Young Airhawk to their son, Arnold Graue. 56HUNDRED is a new lifestyle label which also harks back to Wolvaart who, in 1781, paid the sum of 5'600 florins for his farm. So far, a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Chenin blanc have been released in this range.
