Scala Dei

Nutrient-poor slate soils and old Grenache vines give the Priorat wines their incomparable character. Bodegas Scala Dei's selections blend strength with elegance.

The Bodegas Cellers de Scala Dei are named after the old 12th century charterhouse Cartoixa de Santa Maria d'Escaladei. This priory (or "Priorat") also gave its name to the mountainous winegrowing area in which it is situated. The winery, which was founded in 1973, is one of the oldest businesses in the region.
The roughly 70 hectares of vines which the winery manages can be found at 300 to 600 metres above sea level. The vines grow in the typical "llicorella" slate soils where they have to form roots up to 15 metres deep in order to find enough water and nutrients.
It is primarily the Grenache grapes from vines up to 55 years old that give the Scala Dei wines their character. Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah are also added.
