With the elegant and incredibly multifaceted Viña El Pisón, he also created a legendary single-vineyard wine which was the first on the river Ebro to be awarded 100 Parker points. Tempranillo by Artadi and Viñas de Gain are produced from grapes harvested from several plots and are the basis for the new single-vineyard wines.
Juan Carlos and his son Carlos work exclusively with grapes from the northern Basque side of the river. Leaving the Rioja appellation was their way of protesting against the continuing lack of a terroir classification in the DOCa regulations. The two winemakers have also been working for years in Navarre with their Bodegas y Viñedos Artazu winery and in Alicante with Bodegas y Viñedos El Sequé.
