Marqués de Riscal

High-quality wines under the name Marqués de Riscal have been produced in the small Spanish village of Elciego since 1858. With the help of the famous Canadian architect Frank O. Gehry, a very special project was set up at the heart of the Marqués de Riscal estate.
The Marqués de Riscal winery has a long winegrowing tradition.

Marqués de Riscal: first-class Spanish wine

The Marqués de Riscal winery is located in the small village of Elciego in Spain's Rioja region, or more precisely in Rioja Alavesa. Around 4 million bottles of wine are filled here each year.
A particular feature – and the core of the Marqués de Riscal estate – is the winery's oldest wine cellar, built in 1858, and the extension added in 1883. "La Catedral" contains wines from every vintage since 1862.

The "City of Wine" on the Marqués de Riscal estate

Elciego has had a new key feature since 2006: the Hotel Marqués de Riscal, designed by the famous architect Frank O. Gehry. It lends the winery's atmosphere a visible shape by combining innovation and tradition in a single building constructed from ultra-modern materials that has long since become an architectural landmark. The "City of Wine" is without a doubt one of the most ambitious projects ever to be undertaken at a Spanish winery.
The spectacular form of the hotel building designed by Frank O. Gehry, together with the magnificent countryside and surrounding vineyards of Marqués de Riscal, form a one-of-a-kind backdrop.
The estate covers around 100,000 square metres and is dedicated to the production, cultivation and study of wine – here, people can enjoy everything relating to wine and its producers directly and naturally – a completely new and far-reaching experience of the culture and essence of good wine. Surrounded by extensive vineyards, the entire estate is still permeated by the spirit of its origin, the omnipresent honouring of the grape, that little gem which gives us wine.

Fine wines from the Marqués de Riscal winery

The grapes for the Marqués de Riscal wines grow on 1,500 hectares of land between Elciego and neighbouring villages such as Leza, Laguardia and Villabuena. The nutrient-poor soil on the various terraces above the Ebro river consists of calcareous clay. This part of the Rioja Alavesa winegrowing region has always been best known for wines that age exceptionally well, which is due to the high acidity and good tannin structure of the grape must. Most of the wines here are produced from Tempranillo, sometimes blended with Cabernet Sauvignon. The Marqués de Riscal winemakers produce only wines of the Reserva and Gran Reserva quality levels. These designations guarantee that the wine has matured for at least 36 or 60 months respectively. The demands in terms of vinification, alcohol content and production of the wines are high at Marqués de Riscal.
One top wine that comes from the Marqués de Riscal estate is Barón de Chirel, which is produced in a similar way to a Bordeaux. It is blended from Cabernet Sauvignon, Graciano and Tempranillo. The Marqués de Riscal estate has a special permit, allowing it to use Cabernet Sauvignon in Rioja.
