Château Gombaude Guillot

Château Gombaude Guillot, a family business in the heart of Pomerol that has been purely organic since 1997, also produces Clos Plince, a rare single-vineyard cuvée.
Clos Plince is a contiguous parcel of just 1.15 hectares of sandy soils over a loam subsoil.
Claire Laval-Techer began to take care of her family's estate in 1991, thus going down in history as one of the first women to take charge of a vineyard and cellar in Pomerol. The pioneering decision to go purely organic, starting in 1997, was nothing less than revolutionary in this region at the time. When Claire succeeded in achieving official recognition for Gombaude Guillot as an organic estate in 2000, it was the first truly organic top estate in the Bordeaux region. This energetic winemaker was also responsible for deciding in 2001 that grapes from a parcel called Clos Plince, which was planted in 1902, would be harvested, vinified and bottled separately.
Gombaude Guillot, and with it Clos Plince, came into the family's possession in 1860. Claire is the sixth generation to be involved. The estate extends over eight hectares – a good size in Pomerol – of prime soils located on the appellation's high plateau, surrounded by some of the most famous estates anywhere in Pomerol.
Clos Plince is a single parcel of just 1.15 hectares of sandy soils over a loam subsoil. Soils like these warm up quickly, generally allowing grapes to ripen a little earlier. The Clos is planted with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet (Sauvignon and franc), which are harvested separately by hand and fermented in cement tanks with naturally occurring yeasts. They are then aged for around 12 months in oak barrels, resulting in a full-bodied Pomerol with a distinctive character that is eminently suitable for laying down.
