Château Suau – Monique Bonnet

Château Suau is located in the region between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers known as Entre-deux-Mers. It is a particularly old estate, originating from a hunting pavilion of the Ducs d'Epernon (who founded Château Beychevelle in the Médoc). It was known in the 19th century for its red, white and sweet wines.
The vineyards of Suau are situated on gentle hills of gravel and deep loam, mainly facing south-southeast.
Today Suau produces mainly red wines from the Cadillac Côtes de Bordeaux appellation. Situated on contiguous parcels at an altitude of around 100 metres (the highest point of the appellation), its 66 hectares are planted with about 60% Merlot, supplemented with Cabernet Sauvignon and a small proportion of Cabernet franc. The outstanding 2016 vintage consists of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. The 16 hectares of woods and meadows surrounding the vineyards are also owned by Monique Bonnet, the current manager of this extensive estate – which enabled her to begin the conversion to organic methods in 2008. Suau has been Ecocert certified since 2014. Monique and her father acquired Suau in 1986, making 2016 this enterprising over-achiever's 31st vintage.
The vineyards of Suau are situated on gentle hills of gravel and deep loam, mainly facing south-southeast – which optimizes the ripeness of the grapes. The wines are skilfully crafted, full-bodied and naturally elegant, and the conversion to organic methods has increased their freshness and made them particularly harmonious, with notes of fruit, mint and liquorice.
