Domaine Françoise et Denis Clair

Wines from Santenay and Saint-Aubin, rich in finesse.
Mondovino will give you an insight into the work of the Domaine Françoise et Denis Clair and its range of wines.
The Françoise et Denis Clair family domaine was founded in 1986. The property had only five hectares of vines at the time, located in the commune of Santenay and planted exclusively with Pinot noir. Over time it was enlarged by the purchase and lease of several parcels of Chardonnay vines in the commune of Saint-Aubin. The winery where all the family's wines are pressed is located in the village of Saint-Aubin, where Françoise Clair grew up. Fifteen hectares of vineyards are cultivated today. Their son Jean-Baptiste, who has been working at the domaine since 2000, has expanded the range of wines somewhat and set up a small wine store in Saint-Aubin. Almost all the domaine's production of about 75,000 bottles a year is bottled by the estate itself. This is far from self-evident: until relatively recently a very large proportion of Burgundy wines was bottled by merchants, not their wineries of origin.
The Clair family strives to make its wines even better every year. The red wines are fermented with 10% grape stems to give the wine extra structure. Fermentation takes place in concrete vats after about ten days of cold maceration to extract more aroma. Ageing takes place entirely in pièces. The Clair family wants the wines to be dominated by grape aromas, not wood – so no more than 20% of the barrels are new. Regularly reviewed in the French wine press (the Guide Hachette, for example), the wines have won several awards.
