Moët & Chandon

Moët & Chandon, the biggest champagne brand, has virtually become a synonym for sparkling wines from northern France – but quantity goes hand in hand with top quality.
Moët & Chandon, the biggest champagne brand, has virtually become a synonym for sparkling wines from northern France.
In Epernay, in the centre of Champagne, the great champagne houses have their own street: the "Avenue de Champagne" – much of which is occupied by the Moët et Chandon winery. But the most important part of the house lies beneath the street, in the kilometre-long chalk tunnels where the top cuvées mature under optimum conditions.
Claude Moët founded his brand as early as 1743, but it was not until his grandson Jean-Remy Moët took over the house in 1792 that it achieved greatness. He was the first to introduce strict quality control, and he is also regarded as the inventor of marketing: he travelled tirelessly around the world to promote his products to the great and the good of the era. His friendship with Napoleon was also conducive to the company's development, and to the spread of champagne. In 1832 his son Victor Moët and son-in-law Pierre-Gabriel Chandon took over the company, which has been called Moët et Chandon ever since. Today it is the world's largest producer and trader of champagne.
Moët & Chandon owns around 1,000 hectares of its own vines – but as these meet only a fraction of its grape requirements, the company is also the largest buyer of grapes in Champagne, owning several vinification centres at the most important sites that run at full speed at harvest time.
The most legendary cuvée of the house is the "Brut Imperial". Despite a production run of many millions of bottles, this Brut is technically very clean, has elegance and finesse – and it serves as a benchmark against which other brands measure their cuvées. "Brut Imperial" from Moët et Chandon is a blend of Pinot noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. Vintage champagnes, designated "Grand Vintage", are available in both white and pink. The "Grand Vintage Collection" is a series of old, cellar-aged vintages that are only released onto the market in small quantities.
You too can enjoy the taste and quality of Moët & Chandon champagnes. In addition to the famous "Brut Imperial", you will always find coveted vintage champagnes from Moët et Chandon at Mondovino.
