Gérard Bertrand owns 16 wine estates in the south of France. Convinced that viticulture in harmony with nature is the best way to produce great wines that reflect their terroir, he began converting his Domaine de Cigalus to biodynamic cultivation back in 2002.
Determined to master this cultivation method, he began to convert his vineyards. Today the vineyards are managed biodynamically – they are all Demeter-certified or in the process of certification. This is unusual expertise for a winemaker with such a large area under cultivation. The 880 hectares are divided among 16 estates, each with its own particularities in terms of soil, climate and terroir – facilitating the diversification of approaches and experiences. This further reinforces the expertise of Gérard Bertrand and his teams, making them an international benchmark in biodynamic viticulture.
In 2020 Gérard Bertrand's exemplary commitment was recognized when The Drinks Business Green Awards named him their "Green Personality of the Year".
In order to pass on his convictions and expertise and to promote the pursuit of organic cultivation in the South of France, Gérard Bertrand has developed a department dedicated to building long-term ten-year partnerships to support winemakers who are practising organic farming or are in the process of converting to it. These partnerships consist in providing technical, organizational and financial support for project implementation.
Known for his great talent as an assembleur as well as for his daring and creativity, Gérard Bertrand achieves remarkable international success with great innovation, coordinating premium wines and bottle design – and producing brands such as Côte des Roses, Naturae and Gris Blanc.
Gérard Bertrand promotes the Mediterranean way of life with a thriving tourist, cultural and artistic programme – especially around the Château l'Hospitalet in Narbonne, a true Mecca for wine tourism that has welcomed the big names of the international jazz scene to its festival every summer for the past 17 years.
