On special occasions, we all like to treat ourselves to something special – a fine wine, for example. Classic wine-growing countries such as France, Italy and also Switzerland produce prized high-quality wines that are perfect for celebrating Christmas or New Year in style. We have selected some fine wines that we love and/or that are rated highly by international wine experts. Champagne is perfect for a special occasion. Beside the big brands, small estates produce entirely independent "vintner champagne". A safe bet and one of the best blanc de blancs is the elegant, concentrated Fleur de Passion Grand Cru 2006, which is made from 100% Chardonnay and comes from the reliable Diebolt-Vallois family estate. Among the leading wineries in Switzerland is Zanini. Its complex, barrique-aged Castello Luigi 2012 comprises mostly Merlot with a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
The full-bodied Completer Barrique 2017 is perfect for a special occasion. This unique speciality is made from an old white grape variety. The Bündner Herrschaft region in Graubünden is home to 5.5 hectares of these grapes. Completer takes its name from completorium, the evening service of the Benedictine monks. After the service the monks would enjoy a glass in silence. Thanks to its distinct acidity, Completer has a great ageing potential. This is also true of the Amarone Classico della Valpolicella Vaio Amaron Serego Alighieri 2011 from top producer Masi. Made from 65% Corvina, 20% Rondinella and 15% Molinara, this Italian classic is a highly complex, full-bodied wine with an intense, multifaceted bouquet. The high alcohol content is perfectly integrated. The Amarone is an ideal accompaniment to a special meal – or for meditation.
